How Use of Topamax Can Affect the Individual with Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurologic group of disorders diagnosed in approximately 125,000 Americans each year. This is due to the abnormal electoral impulses in the brain resulting to tics and seizures. The primary cause of seizures has got to do with brain-related injuries such as low oxygen at birth, brain tumors and etc. Drug therapy is significant in the management of Epilepsy but some medications such as Topamax is required FDA warnings and drug labels on their medication for its connection to the development of eye conditions such as Glaucoma and Acute Myopia. As indicated above, epilepsy is a group of disoders which means that there are different types of seizures. Whatever type of seizure disorder the individual has, the inconvenience and disruption to the patient’s normal functions cannot be neglected. People who are suffering from this disorder and their families deserve to know its management especially when seizure attacks happen.

In Case of Seizure Attack

Safety is the top priority when someone is having seizure attacks. If someone is having an attack, make sure that the area is safe, both for patient and the people around. Remove anything that might compromise the airway like constrictive clothing. Do not restrain or try to force anything into the patient’s mouth as this can cause potential injury. After the episode, place the patient in a recovering position (side-lying) to make sure that the secretions won’t enter the airways which could cause choking.  The person may appear confused after the attack so it is advised to not leave the patient alone for a period of time. In many cases, it is always recommended to contact an ambulance or health care personnel.

How to Effectively Deal with the Disorder?

Pharmacological Management

In dealing with epilepsy and seizures, medications are of great importance. The goal of the therapy is to rid of the attacks while having less unwanted side effects as much as possible. The generic Topiramate with brand name Topamax is used to prevent epileptic attacks. It can be combined with other seizure medications for full efficacy.  However, it was reclassified into Category D by the U.S. FDA after studies associated it with the formation of birth defects. It has also been associated with some serious eye conditions like the formation of glaucoma and development of acute myopia. Each person is different from the other so response to treatment may differ. The therapy should be discussed with your doctor so you’ll be given options and you can decide altogether for the best plan as you will be evaluated according to a lot of things.

Lifestyle Changes

In conjunction with medication treatment, the person should also make amends with his/her lifestyle since some activities could trigger the seizure episodes such as stress, lack of sleep and use of prohibited alcohol and drugs. It is often encouraged that you keep track of the episodes and record the important information regarding the attack like the date, time, the cause and other important details that can be used in the management of the condition.

Certain types of seizures may be gone even without drug therapy and others like those with childhood epilepsy can grow up to be normal adults but some sufferers unfortunately felt more pain by having complications like those of Topamax side effects. This condition might turn out to be a chronic illness and will need the hundred percent commitment of the patients to their treatment plan.
